Heat in the attic – which coverings should you choose for roof windows?

Heat in the attic – which coverings should you choose for roof windows?

An attic is a very cosy place and a great space to make use of. You can set up a bedroom, a children's room, a home office or a guest room there. It does, however, have one drawback that becomes especially noticeable in summer – the rooms heating up strongly. On hot days the temperature in such an interior can rise quickly, and the intense sun coming through the roof windows can make it harder to rest, work and go about daily life.

A hot attic – where does the problem come from?

Roof windows are set at an angle, so they take in more sunlight than standard vertical windows. In addition, the attic sits at the very top of the building, directly under the roof, which means the rooms heat up faster. Heat from the lower floors also rises upward and can build up precisely in the upper parts of the building, so a hot attic quickly becomes a real issue.

In summer the problem becomes even more noticeable, because the roof windows are exposed to intense sun for much of the day. As a result, the room can become uncomfortable. Fortunately, there is something you can do about it – just a few proven solutions will help improve the atmosphere and limit the room from heating up.

Small changes, greater comfort

You can improve comfort in the attic without a full renovation, changing the roof structure or investing in expensive solutions. Sometimes simple everyday habits make a big difference, helping to limit the room heating up and making the interior more pleasant.

On hot days it is worth planning ventilation well. It is best to do it in the morning and evening, when the air is cooler. During the day, especially in strong sun, it is better not to leave windows open for many hours, because hot air can come inside. If you are leaving for work, closing the windows and shading the glass can help keep a more pleasant temperature indoors.

Plants are a good support too. They liven up the interior, bring a cosy atmosphere and help create a more pleasant microclimate. In the attic they work great as natural decoration, especially in the living room, bedroom or home office.

If there is a kitchenette in the attic, during the greatest heat it is worth limiting long cooking, frying and the use of appliances that raise the temperature further. It is better to opt for lighter meals and to unplug devices you are not currently using. These are small things, but in summer even small heat sources can matter.

It is also worth looking at the interior decor itself. Thick rugs and carpeting can make a room feel warmer and heavier. An uncovered floor gives a lighter, cooler effect, so in summer you can cut down on textiles and go for a simpler arrangement.

Beyond everyday tricks, it is also worth paying attention to the condition of the roof's ventilation and insulation, especially if the problem with high temperature returns every summer. These, however, are measures that involve a bigger intervention in the building and cannot always be carried out right away. A temporary solution can be a portable air conditioner, and a more advanced option the installation of air conditioning. This is not always possible, though, especially in a rented flat or when we do not want to make bigger changes.

If you are looking for a simpler way to limit harsh sun and improve comfort, it is worth starting with the roof windows. It is precisely through them that a lot of light and heat enters, so well-chosen roof window blinds can quickly improve the everyday conditions inside.

To the rescue: skylight blinds

One of the simplest ways to improve comfort in the attic is skylight blinds. These are practical coverings created with windows mounted on a slope in mind, so they work well where ordinary solutions might be less convenient. The blind sits flush against the window and does not hang loosely, which matters a lot with roof windows set at an angle.

Thanks to their concertina (pleated) construction, the blind can be comfortably slid and set exactly where the sun is shining at a given moment. You can cover the lower or upper part of the window or set it in the middle of the pane, leaving an inflow of natural light. This is a big advantage in summer, when we do not always want to cut the room off from light completely, but we do want to limit the sun's rays.

Skylight blinds are convenient in everyday use. They are moved using handles, which makes it easy to adjust the covering's position to the time of day, the direction of the sunlight and your own needs. They work both when you want to rest in the bedroom or do some work at the computer, and when you want to create more pleasant conditions in a children's room or living room.

A wide choice of colours lets you match the blind to your interior. Light shades will look light and subtle, while darker ones can emphasise the window more strongly and add cosiness to the room. As a result, a skylight blind is not only a practical covering but also an aesthetic part of the decor.

Stable mounting also matters. Invasively mounted skylight blinds hold well on the window, so you can use them without worrying that the covering will slide or stand off from the frame. This is especially important with roof windows that are set at an angle and require a well-fitted solution.

When choosing a blind, you should match it to your window. With standard roof windows the right dimensions matter, while with Velux windows it is even simpler – you can match the blind to a specific window model.

Skylight blinds for Velux windows

If you have a Velux roof window, choosing the right blind is even simpler. You do not have to measure the whole window yourself – just check the model code on the frame and pick a product matched to it. As a result, the Velux blind fits the window well, holds stably and works conveniently day to day.

Velux blinds for roof windows are designed for specific window models, so it is easy to avoid a mistake when buying. There are many colours to choose from, so you can match the covering both to a bright, minimalist bedroom and to a cosier arrangement.

Blind colour and the amount of light inside

The colour of the blinds has a big influence on how we perceive light in a room. Lighter shades, such as white, beige or powder pink, gently diffuse the light and make the interior seem brighter and visually larger. This is a good solution for smaller rooms on the upper floor of the building, where we want a light effect and a pleasant, bright atmosphere.

Darker colours, in turn, such as brown, navy or black, give a stronger window-covering effect and a cosier character to the interior. They work where the sun is particularly intense. Thanks to the wide range of colours, you can match the blinds not only to practical needs but also to the style of the whole arrangement.

Which rooms do skylight blinds suit?

Skylight blinds work in many rooms in the attic. In the bedroom they help create more pleasant conditions for rest. This is important especially in summer, when the sun comes through the roof windows early and can disturb a peaceful sleep.

They will be just as practical in a home office. If the desk stands close to the window, harsh sun rays can reflect off the monitor and get in the way of work. The blind lets you cover the part of the pane through which light is currently coming in, making it easier to ensure comfort while working at the computer.

In a children's room, skylight blinds help create a more comfortable space for play, learning and rest during the day. A wide choice of colours makes it easy to match them to different arrangements – from bright, calm children's rooms to more colourful and cosy interiors.

Pleated blinds also fit well in a guest room arranged under a slope and in a kitchen on the upper floor of the building. In the living room, a suitably chosen window covering improves comfort, limits intense sun and affects the look of the whole space. In the kitchen, on the other hand, what counts is convenience in everyday use and easy cleaning – if it gets dirty, you just gently wipe the blind with a damp cloth. This is a practical solution for interiors where both functionality and aesthetics matter.

A comfortable attic even on hot days

An attic can be a cosy and functional space, but in summer it often needs proper preparation. It is worth ensuring good ventilation, limiting extra heat sources and shading the roof windows from intense sun. Skylight blinds help regulate the amount of light, improve comfort inside and suit different rooms – from the bedroom to a home office or kitchen. Thanks to many colours and a fit to roof windows, they can be both a practical and an aesthetic part of our home.
